World War II Veteran and Urbana Firefighter Jim Kelly, Sr. was remembered in the Illinois House during Veto Session, and he was honored for his unending commitment to his country and community in House Resolution 873 presented by Rep. Brad Halbrook.
Jim Kelly graduated from Urbana High School and was working for the P & E Railroad Company when the United States entered World War II. He immediately attempted to join the service but was denied because his job was deemed “essential”. Jim was finally granted a release by railroad, and immediately joined the Marine Corps. He fought the entire 36-day battle of Iwo Jima.
“Jim Kelly gave his entire life to public service for his country, and for his local community. We were honored to recognize his courage. He has set an amazing example for future generations,” Rep. Halbrook said.
“Jim’s family told me that some of his fondest memories were caddying for Horton Smith, the first Master’s Champion, and getting a beer from his favorite actor, John Wayne,” Rep. Halbrook said. “His was a life well-lived, and honor well-deserved.”
