Illinoisans currently face the second highest property taxes in the country. While Democrats form a partisan working group to say they are doing something about the issue, House Republicans have already introduced a number of solutions that can be voted on today, including Rep. Halbrook’s legislation:
- HB 1495: Tasks the Dept. of Revenue with creating a Property Tax Pilot Program.
- HB 1496: Beginning in 2026 assessment year, valuation of residential property may not exceed 101% and nonresidential property may not exceed 102% of the previous year’s assessment without modifications, improvements, or additions.
- HB 1497: For levy years 2026-2030, the term “taxing district” includes each home rule taxing district. The extension limitation for those years is 0% or the rate of the increased was approved by voters.
