SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) responded to Governor Pritzker’s annual budget address today, saying families and small businesses should expect more of the same financial mismanagement from Springfield.
“I hate to call it Deja Vu, but it feels like we are exactly where we have been in previous years when it comes to Illinois’ budget,” Rep. Halbrook said. “Once again, families across our state are tightening their belts, small businesses are watching every dollar, and yet in Springfield, the conversation sounds very familiar – more spending, bigger budgets, no relief.”
Halbrook warned that the Governor’s speech will focus on familiar talking points instead of real reform.
“You won’t hear a serious plan for substantive property tax reform,” the lawmaker said. “Illinois families pay the highest property taxes in the nation. Seniors on fixed incomes are being taxed out of their homes.”
The Republican lawmaker from Shelbyville also called for greater fiscal responsibility.
“Contrary to Speaker Welch and Governor Pritzker – Illinois does not have a revenue problem — it has a spending problem,” the lawmaker said. “Until we are willing to prioritize core services and eliminate waste, taxpayers will continue to feel squeezed.”
“The people of Illinois deserve an honest assessment of where we stand,” the lawmaker added. “It’s time to break the cycle. Illinois deserves better than another year of groundhog day budgeting.”
