PRESS RELEASE: Gov. Pritzker is Why Families are Leaving Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) says Illinois must change course as neighboring states take steps to attract Illinois families, businesses, and communities frustrated with the state’s direction.

Indiana has already signed into law the Indiana–Illinois Border Commission. Iowa has filed similar legislation. Both states are opening the door to conversations with Illinois counties about joining their states. Representative Halbrook noted that Kentucky, Missouri, and Wisconsin could soon follow.

“Other states are not trying to send people here,” said Halbrook. “They are preparing to receive people from here, and maybe even our world class football team – the Chicago Bears.”

More than three dozen Illinois counties have passed advisory referendums or joined movements expressing frustration with state leadership. Illinois continues to lose population year after year.

“But sadly, when families say they are frustrated, they are told by the Governor, ‘If you want to leave, get up and move,’” Halbrook said. “And sadly, many are doing just that. This is not proof of his leadership. It’s proof his policies are forcing Illinois families to leave.”

Halbrook pointed to high property taxes, the highest gas taxes in the Midwest, rising fees, and record state spending as key drivers of outmigration. Lawmakers are expected to consider another record-breaking state budget this year for FY2027.

“If bigger government were the answer, Illinois would be booming,” Halbrook said. “Instead, we are shrinking.”
