SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) is calling on the Illinois General Assembly to take immediate action to protect family farms by repealing or reforming the estate tax.
After meeting with Future Farmers of America students at the Capitol, Halbrook said he heard growing concern from young people who want to return home and continue their family’s farming legacy, but fear the financial burden placed on their families by the estate tax.
“What this body should be doing is repealing the estate tax in its entirety,” Halbrook said. “The very least we can do is reform the estate tax by passing the Family Farm Preservation Act immediately. That’s the only way to ensure that the next generation of Illinois agriculture has a farm to come home to.”
Halbrook said the estate tax is forcing too many multi-generational farm families into difficult decisions, including selling land or assets just to pay a tax bill after the loss of a loved one.
“Our FFA students are the future of agriculture in Illinois,” Halbrook said. “If we truly support them, we need to act now to preserve the family farm.”
