Red Cross Blood Shortage Impacting Central IL

ILLINOIS – Earlier this week, the American Red Cross announced a national emergency blood shortage as the nation’s blood supply declined by nearly 25% during the month of June. This shortage comes during the height of summer, when hospitals often experience increased demand for blood due to trauma cases, emergency surgeries and other critical medical needs.

A sharp decline in blood donations over the past several weeks has created a growing gap between the blood products available and the needs of patients. The shortage is especially critical for Type O positive and Type B negative blood, though donors of all blood types are urgently needed.

Appointments can be made through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
