The recent 1500% increase in wooded acreage assessments for some Montgomery County landowners is unacceptable and represents a deeply concerning attack on property rights, State Representative Brad Halbrook stressed today. Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) said that he and other State Representatives representing Montgomery County are calling on the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners to act swiftly to find a fair and equitable solution.
“Private property rights are at serious risk. Forcing landowners to choose between enrolling in yet another government program or facing excessive taxation is entirely uncalled for. These drastic measures erode trust in government and place unnecessary burdens on property owners,” Rep. Halbrook said. “As a State Representative, I have always been a strong advocate for taxpayers and the principle of local control. On this issue, it’s clear that the Illinois General Assembly will not provide the timely answers Montgomery County residents need. This problem must be addressed and resolved locally.”
Rep. Halbrook urged the Montgomery County Board to take immediate steps to ensure assessments are fair and do not penalize landowners.
“Let’s stand up for property rights and prevent these excessive tax hikes from devastating our communities,” Rep. Halbrook said. “If you are affected, I encourage you to contact your local officials and share your concerns. By working together, we can push for a solution that is fair, respects property rights, and serves the best interests of all Montgomery County residents.”
