SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Brad Halbrook is encouraging residents to take part in a statewide effort led by the Illinois State Museum to commemorate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary by sharing their family stories.
As the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence approaches, the museum is inviting Illinoisans to submit stories that have been passed down through their families. Selected stories may be featured in exhibitions, programs, and social media as part of the museum’s America 250 initiative.
The museum is seeking submissions that include stories about when and why a family first came to Illinois, memories of what life was like for past generations, childhood stories shared by parents or grandparents, or stories about how family members met.
All stories are welcome, whether they happened recently or generations ago, and whether they involve major historical events or everyday family moments.
In 2026, the Illinois State Museum will highlight Illinois as a “Land of Stories,” with planned exhibitions exploring Indigenous life, the natural world, the people of Illinois, and the legacy of U.S. Route 66.
Residents can submit a story by visiting the Illinois State Museum’s website and completing a short survey. More information is available through the Illinois State Museum online.
