SPRINGFIELD – With only two weeks remaining in the legislative session, State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) is raising concerns about the direction Illinois is heading under the Democrat supermajority.
Speaking on the House floor Tuesday, Halbrook warned that Illinois families, businesses, and job creators are continuing to face rising costs and growing government mandates.
“Nearly every day, one of us rises on a point of personal privilege to sound the alarm about the direction this state is heading,” Halbrook said. “Whether it is myself or my colleagues Tom Weber, Blaine Wilhour, Adam Niemerg, Chris Miller, or Marty McLaughlin, we continue to raise concerns because the people we represent are living the consequences of the policies being pushed through this chamber.”
Halbrook said Illinoisans are struggling with affordability while confidence in state government continues to decline.
“The people of Illinois are watching an agenda unfold in real time that drives up costs on working families, adds layer after layer of regulations on businesses, restricts individual freedoms, and makes it harder to live, work, and raise a family in this state,” Halbrook said. “Illinoisans are paying more, getting less, and being told they should simply accept it.”
Halbrook also criticized the legislative process in Springfield, arguing that debate is too often limited before lawmakers and the public receive full answers on legislation being considered.
“We debate these issues in committee. We debate them here on the House floor. We present facts. We present concerns from our constituents. We ask difficult but necessary questions,” Halbrook said. “And too often, when we begin getting over the target, debate gets cut short.”
Halbrook said Illinois should focus on policies that encourage economic growth, affordability, and opportunity for working families.
“We should be making Illinois more affordable, not more expensive. We should be making Illinois safer, not less secure. We should be making Illinois more competitive, not driving away jobs and investment. And we should be protecting freedom, not restricting it,” Halbrook said.
Halbrook concluded by urging lawmakers to change course before more residents and businesses leave Illinois.
“It is time to change course before more families leave, more businesses close, and more opportunities disappear from the state we all care about,” Halbrook said.
