SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) spoke on the House Floor Wednesday to outline the legislative games being played in Springfield during the final week of 2026 Spring Session.
“A deadline we have known about for months, yet somehow it never seems to matter until the eleventh hour when the state budget is finalized under the cover of darkness” said Rep. Halbrook. “Just last week, reports surfaced that House Democrats are once again discussing tax increases behind closed doors in caucus meetings.”
Halbrook, the lawmaker from Central Illinois, pointed out the legislative history of tax increases since he assumed office.
“Governor JB Pritzker has raised taxes on Illinoisans over 50 times since becoming Governor, and the Democrats in this body have approved those increases every time” said Halbrook.
Halbrook is spending his final weeks of session advocating for property tax reform, a pause or repeal on the gas tax, and no new state taxes.
The Illinois General Assembly is set to adjourn the 2026 Spring Session on May 31st, 2026.
