The U.S. Department of Education announced Illinois institutions of higher education will receive $218 million for emergency financial aid to students. The funding is from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund.
Grants are intended for students who encountered expenses related to their education disrupted by the COVID-19 crisis. Grants can be used for course materials and technology, food, housing, health care and childcare. Colleges and universities will determine which students receive the cash grants.
Students needing assistance should contact their school’s financial aid or student affairs offices.
